When Snoring Hurts Your Health: Is Snoring a Sign of Health Issues?

Snoring can be more than just an annoying, sleep-interrupting issue. This habit may cause restlessness and make it difficult for others to sleep, but it can also be much worse.

In fact, snoring can indicate serious health issues. The team at Living Oaks Dental wants our patients to know about health problems associated with snoring, and when you should seek treatment. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Snoring Alone Does Not Cause Major Health Issues

Snoring, without any other symptoms, usually does not indicate any kind of serious health issue, and it does not cause any major health problems. Snoring is simply a “turbulent” flow of air through the nasal passages and the airway. This turbulence causes the soft tissues of the nose, palate and throat to vibrate. In turn, this makes a rasping sound.

This is usually because the passages are clogged or constricted, which is why snoring is so common among those who have allergies or a cold. Some congenital deformities can also cause this, such as a long palate or a deviated septum. Snoring is also more common in patients who are overweight.

On its own, snoring is not harmful.

Snoring Can Indicate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Chronic, non-stop snoring is usually an indicator that something else is wrong. One of the most common, major issues indicated by snoring is Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA for short. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissues of the throat and palate relax during sleep, sag into the airway, and obstruct proper breathing.

These constant interruptions in breathing can cause poor quality sleep. The body is unable to get the oxygen that it needs, which can increase blood pressure and the risk of heart attack or stroke. Snoring is a big indicator of obstructive sleep apnea, particularly if it is associated with choking, gasping, or snorting sounds. These sounds indicate the interruption and resumption of breathing.

When Should I Be Concerned About Snoring?

Whether you have a snoring problem, or you suspect that your sleeping partner does, there are a few indicators you should be aware of that can indicate the presence of OSA.

Dry mouth and sore throat upon waking is a common sign of OSA, as well as excessive daytime sleepiness, morning irritability, and feeling tired even after sleeping for 7+ hours. You should also listen for pauses or “gaps” in breathing, which indicate an episode of OSA.

If you notice any of these symptoms, or believe that you may need an assessment, come to Living Oaks Dental for expert care and diagnosis.
