Sleep Apnea Treatment

at Living Oaks Dental

Sleep apnea is a condition that affects millions of Americans, and many people don’t even realize that they suffer from this common issue. At Living Oaks Dental, Dr Brabston and the team diagnose and treat sleep apnea to give patients happy, healthy lives. Mild cases of sleep apnea can cause irritability, poor quality sleep, and restlessness. More severe cases of sleep apnea can increase your blood pressure and your risk of stroke or heart disease. Call us today to schedule an appointment for diagnosis or treatment!

Understanding

Sleep Apnea

The most common form of sleep apnea is “obstructive sleep apnea”, which is a condition that occurs when the soft tissues of the throat and palate relax during sleep. In turn, this blocks (obstructs) the airway for several seconds, impairing your ability to breathe properly during sleep.

There are several risk factors for sleep apnea, including obesity, a family history of sleep apnea, large tonsils, a large neck circumference, and the consumption of alcohol before bed. Snoring is one of the most visible symptoms of sleep apnea, but heavy snoring alone is not a medical condition. If you think you or a loved one may be suffering from sleep apnea, call us today for a diagnosis!

Recognizing the Signs

of Sleep Apnea

Recognizing sleep apnea is simple, in most cases. You should look for the following symptoms in yourself, your partner, or your child, if you suspect a case of sleep apnea:

  • Heavy snoring throughout the night
  • Waking up from sleep choking or gasping
  • Difficulty sleeping and excessive restlessness
  • Low-quality sleep and daytime sleepiness
  • Dry mouth, sore throat and nose after waking up
  • Headaches when waking up in the morning

If you recognize more than one (or all) of these symptoms, visit Dr. Brabston or a sleep specialist for a diagnosis.

Treatment Options

for Sleep Apnea

There are several treatment options for sleep apnea at Living Oaks Dental. CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machines deliver a gentle flow of air through a mask to keep you breathing steadily throughout the night. We also offer custom mouthguards (they look somewhat like a retainer) built by Dr. Brabston. Mouthguards reposition the tissues of the mouth and throat, and prevent them from collapsing and obstructing the area during sleep. We also offer surgical correction for the most severe cases of obstructive sleep apnea.
