What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a restorative treatment used to treat minor to severe tooth loss. Patients who have lost their teeth suffer from an inability to properly chew their food, speak clearly, and deal with aesthetic issues with their smiles.

Dentures, by replacing missing teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base, help patients live full lives and restore their confidence. Dentures are removable so they need to be taken out and soaked overnight.

Partial dentures are like a removable version of a fixed bridge, they fill in the gaps where one or a few missing teeth used to be. However, unlike a dental bridge, partials can replace teeth on either side of the mouth with one prosthesis.

They prevent teeth from shifting and restore the appearance and function of teeth. Full dentures are reserved only for patients with severe tooth loss because they replace an entire arch of teeth. This requires extracting any teeth that are remaining in the arch.

What Is

the Denture Treatment Process?

Consultation – Dr. Brabston will need you to come in for a consultation so you can assess the severity of your tooth loss and assess your oral health. Oral health problems need to be treated before dentures can be fitted. He will help you explore your options.

Extractions – Patients who are receiving full dentures need to have their remaining teeth extracted from the arch that is being replaced. You will receive local anesthesia for pain relief and additional sedation if desired.

The healing process takes 8 to 12 weeks before you can be fitted for your official dentures. However, you will receive temporary dentures to wear during your recovery.

Impressions – After any preparatory procedures have been performed, we will take impressions of your mouth which will be sent to a dental lab in charge of denture fabrication. Your impressions serve as a mold for your dentures to be constructed.

We will also take x-rays, and photographs, and measure how your bite fits together so that your dentures will fit like a glove.

Try-In – Once your dentures have been set in a wax framework, you will come to the office for a trial fitting that tests the fit and appearance of your dentures. It is normal at this point to need adjustments. You will let us know if they don’t feel comfortable.

Official Fitting – After all adjustments have been made, you’ll have a final fitting and leave with your dentures. Dr. Brabston will provide you with aftercare instructions.

The Benefits

of Dentures

There are far-reaching consequences of tooth loss besides mere cosmetic imperfections. Not only do dentures fill in gaps in your smile or completely replace missing teeth so you can look younger and feel more confident, but they also restore the missing functionality.

This functionality is important because, without it, you won’t be able to eat your favorite foods or pronounce certain sounds. Tooth loss also causes bone loss, which results in lost support to facial muscles around the mouth.

Dentures help restore support to these areas to prevent premature aging. Dentures are very affordable, accessible, and non-invasive. Compared to dental implants, they’re an instant fix for missing teeth rather than taking up to a year to see the final result.

Best of all, you don’t require a lot of bone support to be eligible so even patients who have a history of gum disease can treat their tooth loss with dentures.

How to

Care For Your Dentures

There are a few different criteria patients must meet in order to be a good candidate for dental implants. First, you must have good overall oral health, and your mouth needs to be free of major issues like gum disease and tooth decay.

As a rule, you also need to have a healthy, strong jaw that can support an implant. In some cases, however, procedures like bone grafts and sinus lifts can be used to reinforce your jaw even if you have suffered from some bone loss. In addition, it’s recommended that you quit smoking before having a dental implant placed. Tobacco use can contribute to a much higher implant failure rate, so most dentists will only treat non-smokers with dental implants.
