How Long Do Veneers Last?

Dental veneers are a popular way for many people to improve the appearance of their teeth quickly, so they can have the picture-perfect smile they truly want.

The process involves removing a bit of the natural tooth’s enamel to create a rougher surface so that the veneers can properly bond to the teeth and hold. It’s considered a permanent procedure because once you file this enamel down, you cannot restore it later on. This is why you should take the time to consider whether veneers are truly the right option for you, as the process cannot be reversed.

But because it’s a permanent procedure, many people wonder if veneers will last them a lifetime. And the answer is: it depends.

The Average Lifetime of Veneers

Dental veneers can last anywhere between 10 and even 30 years. Their lifespan is greatly influenced by how well you care for them, because while veneers are strong, they are not indestructible.

The wear and tear veneers go through on a daily basis can, unfortunately, damage their integrity, and it is possible for veneers to chip, crack, or even break. If this happens, people will usually need to get their veneers replaced in order to get back the smile they want.

Additionally, veneers can protect your teeth to an extent, but if you are not careful to clean your teeth every day, you can still get cavities and decay. Should this happen, you will most likely need to remove the veneers so the dentist can fix the tooth, and then get the veneers replaced.

How to Properly Care for Your Veneers and Oral Health

A good at-home dental care routine can help extend the lifespan of dental veneers. They are not designed to replace your natural teeth as is the case with full arch implants or crowns, so you still need to be mindful of your dental health.

Here are some tips for caring for your dental veneer and overall tooth health:

  • Brush your teeth at least 2 times a day
  • Avoid lots of sweets, especially sticky ones like caramel, which can get stuck to the tooth or veneers
  • Be mindful with your diet, especially regarding hard foods or snacks which can wear and tear your veneers faster
  • Avoid bad habits like using your teeth to open packages, or biting on objects
  • If you grind your teeth, ask your dentist about getting a mouthguard
  • See your dentist periodically for regular check-ups
